We Will No Longer Stand On The Shoulders Of Giants

When I was really establishing my career – my first career – one of the tenants that permeated everything I learnt and experienced was that we were blessed enough to be able to stand on the shoulders of giants.
The sense of being able to go further than those who had come before us – because they had already brought us to where we now stood. And the intimation that if we stood on their shoulders, we could see further into the future than we could imagine if we simply determined that we could do this thing from where we stood on our own.
And yet in the future, it won’t always be on the shoulders of the giants who have come before us that we will stand.
It will increasingly be on the foundations created by AI, and machine learning, and VR driven immersive experiences. The rising of the bots and automation and data driven insights which will literally wipe out much of the way we work and live right now; it’s a world our children inherently both grasp and crave, and one which to me should be met with anticipation for the space it will create to be – creative.
And whilst the drive to STEM is all pervasive and Coding Camps springing up everywhere, do not automatically join the stampede to the promise of being able to stand out in a future market because you are STEM driven, Coding Savvy.
Because Jeff Weiner, CEO of LinkedIn recently conducted a live video stream where he went in behind the data to find what is the most searched skill on LinkedIn.
And it’s NOT Coding.
In fact, it’s not ANYTHING to do with STEM.
The number one skill being searched for on LinkedIn is Communication.
That’s right. It’s not resilience, problem solving, or innovation.
It’s Communication.
So, I wonder when all is said and done, how are you future proofing you, your business, your dreams and aspirations?
Because if your strategy doesn’t have a clear and present focus on dramatically improving your communication skills – the ability to speak, pitch and present, with strength and power – then you are facing a significant risk that the skills you do have will become commoditised and you will be one lamenting the ‘rise of the bots’.
With love,
